SOLIDWORKS default template files used to start a new part, assembly, or drawing document are located in the folders specified in Tools> Options> File Locations> Document Templates. A SOLIDWORKS drawing can be broken into two major components. If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, I encourage you to continue reading for an overview of how to configure, use and re-use templates in the software. These three templates provide you with out-of-the-box settings. Hi everyone welcome to the Alignex blog, my name is Geoffrey and today we’re going to be going through setting up your drawing templates and your sheet formats in SOLIDWORKS. Options include a choice to ‘Always use these default document templates’ or ‘Prompt use to select document template’ is available by selecting a radio button. There is the drawing, which is often the final product of your design, and there is the drawing template, which is the base of all your drawings. Part Drawing Template Instructions . A Template is a special file type that helps users begin a project with the desired settings. SOLIDWORKS Drawing Templates A drawing template serves as the starting point for creating a drawing. If so, then congratulations! Creating a Template You can create your own templates to use as the basis for new part, drawing, and assembly documents. The file location at the top of the window is the default location for the templates in SOLIDWORKS 2014, this is similar for 2015. Figure 15. However, if you already have a specific format that you like your drawings to follow, there are other ways to utilize that data … I say work together because Drawing Templates and Sheet Formats are two separate file types. Selecting a drawing template. Now in the Property Name column, we may either type in the new property names or we may choose the desired name from the drop-down menu (Figures 9 and 10). Then browse to the C:\SOLIDWORKS 2016 TEMPLATES location and give the new template a file name. We click on the options for units and set the unit standard to IPS (Figure 15). Set the precision for dimensions to three places. Select No when this dialog box appears. The names of the three default planes and the origin may be changed. We will leave the Value/Text Expression column blank. You may change the names of the default planes and the origin. Next, in SOLIDWORKS, we will choose File→Save as. In your template, you can customize document properties such as units of measure and dimensioning standards. Now that we have adjusted all the options for our template, we need to save our template as a template file. Figure 25. This folder should be easy to browse, and you should be able to quickly copy the entire folder to be used as a backup to share with your co-workers or to be used on a new computer. Firstly it is important to understand that a drawing template is constructed of two files; the sheet format and the drawing sheet. Although this is an option, I typically stick to the default names of the planes: Front Plane, Top Plane and Right Plane. Click this button until it says Advanced, which indicates that you are looking at the Novice screen, and then double click the default Part template (Figure 5). The … It’s not as straight forward as Part and Assembly templates due to the fact that each sheet can potentially have different sheet sizes and title blocks.
